Fan Fiction Reviews or was I just living under a rock somewhere? lol

LJ has such active users that I rarely venture away these days but thought this site was a worth a mention if you haven't flipped through it already. It's fairly active, covers a wide variety of fandoms, and more importantly for me (since I'm more interested in that), some "classic" uber/original fics--'cause no one has to really catch up with the plot beforehand.

My only comment on the reporting is that so far, the reviews don't tend to be that critical (no antirecs that I know of thus far), so it's still sort of a crapshoot, but some chatter is better than no chatter. Telanu and Somniesperus also seem to be tagged as 2 different authors, too (fix your tags, please! :)).

I'm probably going to be going through the archives for the next few days and seeing if I missed anything. :)

Edit: I mistakenly thought that the tags were for different authors but since some authors have multiple nom de plumes they decided to tag them according to the various permutations as well (eg: Telanu/Somniesperus, Anik La Chev / Nordica). Kudos to [info]fanficrev for correcting my error. :) Oh, and they're open to guest reviewers--details and their policy are in the comments of this post. :)

Update: I just updated the fic reviews and archive listings since it's been over a year since it was the last time I did that.

Yoshinaga Fumi Manga Marathon
bio
[info]ein_myria
As a rule, I never buy graphic novels that I can't read or flip through first. What's most disappointing is that most of the bookstores here wrap their books up in annoying plastic, so to avoid asking the bookstore clerks to unwrap 24 different kinds of books, I usually test drive for a good read online first.

Over this weekend I did a Yoshinaga Fumi manga marathon )

Sunshine: Pod

[info]ein_myria
OK, so the following fic review/rec was what I was looking for in the last post when I was looking for a Sunshine movie fic. Please note that this is a break from femslash and/or het. I just wanted to rec some nice sci-fi writing, where characters aren't trying to hump each other all the time. lol

A review of Pod by Punctuator )

I still have goosebumps.

Finished watching Pandorum some hours ago; now I want to read some fanfics. Anyone know any good ones out there for Pandorum? Or Sunshine?

Please send [info]inell some love!

It's her 10th year anniversary writing fanfics! :) (1999-2009) I think that if you've been around the fanfic block her name won't be unfamiliar to you. Her ability to consistently write interesting fics for certain female characters is pretty amazing. She's able to do Willow/anyone (BtVS) and Hermione/anyone (HP)! It's not yet to the point of reverse-harems just quite yet but I wouldn't be surprised if she managed to pull that off. lol

Speaking of 10 year anniversaries, 10 is apparently the magic number for Krista Perry's Hearts of Ice series (Ranma 1/2) which is now complete! O_o;; It's a classic Ranma/Akane separation story. I think I'll read it later when I have the chance, just for closure... ([info]dreiser, are you going to read it?)

Who would I like to see finish off their fic? How about Speed of the Beat of My Heart by Michal Salat and Joann Muscolo? Supposedly these two have the fic's plot written out, but their yahoo group has been dead for a while...

Who would I like to see more writing from?
Penumbra, Bailey B, Sharon Bowers, dabkey (just to name a few)...

What were you doing in 1999? )

Meta (As seen on the F-list!)
Head's up! The Lambda's (a literary award given yearly to celebrate or explore GLBT themes) have just clarified their policy guidelines for nominations (seen here) so that only self-identifying authors of the LGBT community can win an award. Many think that this is in response to the rise of slash writers (made up largely of (straight) women) who might nominate themselves (or publishers who might nominate them) in the best gay fiction or gay erotica category, but is it really the case?

Dear Author's take
And for yet other perspectives, try linkspam on dreamwidth (kudos to [info]dreiser for the link!)

This is not the first time that Lambda's categorizations has landed itself in some controversy (see the wiki for more details).
thoughts... )

For those who are curious, this is the waybackmachine's link to the May 28, 2008 version of the guidelines (for 2007):
"In determining whether a book should be nominated, consider that the Lambda Literary Awards are based principally on the quality of the writing and the LGBT content of the work. The sexual orientation of the author is secondary."

Review: trekgrrl's Labyrinth series
bio
[info]ein_myria
Spotted this in xenafiction.net's top spots last night and thought it was worth a review. It's been a while since I've done this but I thought I'd dust my reviewing skills off before they get too rusty...

Star Trek: Voyager
Story Link: The Labyrinth, Through The Looking Glass, Holohell, Into The Fire, Murder on the Dead Zone Express, Points of No Return by trekgrrl ([info]trekgrrl?) (Janeway/OFC)

Summary
"While traversing a quagmire of navigational anomalies, Voyager stumbles upon a starship graveyard. In it is a functioning Cardassian sleep tube containing an Deltan/Orion female wanted for crimes against the Federation. However, there are more alien things to be worried about in the center of a labyrinth..."

My trip was fun but very tiring. I need a vacation. lol Anyway here are some updates and recs...

Updates
[info]somniesperus has given notice that she has taken down "Le Jazz Haute," so accordingly it has disappeared from the DWP page... :/

Will be travelling extensively fairly soon, with little or no internet access, so I'm putting this journal on hiatus. Not sure when the next update will be, but it should be sometime after the International Day of Femslash. Have an awesome July~!

Reading

[info]leni_ba is writing an ABC drabble for Kushiel's Legacy, and she wrote a drabble based on my prompt (lust, Melisande/Phedre) - there's still a few alphabet prompts still if you want to add something in. You can find it / read them here.

Oh, speaking of the Kushiel's Legacy, Jacqueline Carey's "Naamah's Kiss" is slated to be out tomorrow in hardcover; if you liked her Kushiel's Dart series it might be worth it to have a browse through.

Another one bites the dust...

I just noticed that Evecho's Grey Ice and Grey Steel's URLs were no longer working, so I've taken them down from the notables list. The former is missing because it was published in an erotica anthology. The second is also missing from all the usual archives; my educated guess is that it's being submitted for another erotica publication.

Oh shit.

I thought I backed everything up before my reformat today. Yup, everything other than my browser bookmarks! *smacks own head* So yeah, it'll be a while before I'll be posting anything.

Luckily [info]leavethesky, a fellow femslash rec'er, just rec'ed a BtVS/L-Word x-over one-shot that's worth a look. I mean, Buffy/Bette? Warning: depictions of somewhat-lame verbiage that's so characteristic of BtVS and potheadedness abound. Oh, and I should probably mention that it has some hot fisting action. Yeah.

Haven't done this in a while.

Manga / Manhwa
(yeah...after discovering One Manga I've been pretty lazy with IRC lol)
1/2 Prince (fantasy/comedy/MMPORPG) <- virtual MMPORPG set in the future, which is something new. lol
Cross Game (baseball / high school / comedy / romance) <- Adachi rehashes the baseball-oriented love triangles with a twist.
Goong (fantasy/romance/politics)
Hana Yori Dango (high school bullying/drama/romance) <- finally got around to reading this.  This can feel quite dated.
Hourou Musuko (transgenderism / cross-dressing / coming of age)
Nana (music/drama/romance)
One Piece (fantasy/adventure) <- arr! Pirates~!
Skip Beat (comedy/acting/romance) <- this is like Glass Mask, only with better comedic scenes. lol
Usagi Drop (drama/josei)
Vanilla Ice (action / gender bending / comedy / high school)

That's strange...

It looks like I've missed a few good stories since relying on [info]femslash_today to deliver the goods. I've been a little distracted as of late with a couple of work projects. Hopefully I'll have time to go through the archives and see if there's anything else I missed...
